M2M devices operate on the same frequency bands as that of the phones and infact many of the M2M devices uses the same chipsets as those used on phones. However M2M devices typically transmit low bandwidth data, so network operators provide specialized data plans for M2M applications.

M2M Focus – Most of operators, especially in North America and Europe, have a dedicated business group for M2M. Typically following support is avaialble for teh network operators,

Data Plans – Generally M2M applications require less bandwidth than USB dongle or Mobile Hotspot type devices. So network operators provide M2M-specific data plans which are usually tiered by amout of data used per month.

SIM Cards – M2M devices in certain vertical markets require SIM cards that operature in extreme condiditons.

Approved Devices – M2M network operators also provide pre-approved modules and devices which would help the application developer to expediate his device approval process.

Vertical-specfic solutions – Becauce M2M solutions are used across different vertical markets, some network operators provide end-to-end solution for specific markets. For example, fleet tracking is a popular M2M solution that is offered by most of the network operators.

M2M Platform – This refers to a portal where M2M application developers can to provisioning and activation of their SIM cards, manage their subscription, monitor data usage, troubleshoot network or device issues etc. Some network operators such as Vodafone, Orange etc do this in-house while other operators such as AT&T, Telstra etc uses third-party provider such as Jasper Wireless to support this activity.

Developer Support – This is thorugh hardware development kits, test SIMs, Application Programming Interface (API) support, Developer conference etc.

Device Approval Process – Network operators generally establish clear guidelines for device certification. This requires industry type approval such as GCF/PTRCRB, regulatory approval such as FCC/CE and in-house network approval process.

M2M Network Operators As network operators face a saturated voice subsciber market, especially in NA and Europe, most of them have expanded by providing M2M services.
